In a horrific coal mine explosion in central China on Friday, eighteen people were killed and three were severely wounded. The deadly accident that hit the Chinese coal industry in a mine in Chenzhou city in the Hunan province happened when a warehouse of detonators and explosives blew up, according to eyewitnesses working in the mine bureau. The powerful blast completely destroyed the three storeyed warehouse in the mine. Last year alone over 3,200 people died in several mine blasts in China. Though the Chinese government has taken steps to close down small mines that could sometimes possibly store explosives purchased illegally, safety measures are not sufficiently enforced in most of the mines in China.
